Vertical Stripes: Avoid or Embrace?

It’s going to happen whether we like it or not and it’s time to decide where you stand on this one. Better now than in the dressing room, wondering, ‘Is this me?’

One of the strongest trends for Spring 2013 is vertical stripes. Cute, like pinstripes, right? No, more like jailbird or circus usher. When Marc Jacobs, Balmain, Michael Kors, Dior, Tommy Hilfiger and Moschino all sent very bold stripes down the runway, I thought, wow…really? And it’s not just the big design houses. Bold stripes are already trickling into more affordable stores like, Asos, Zara and H&M.

I know we are going to see many adorable, stylish women who have managed to make this look chic. In fact, here is proof of it:

But then again she is a model (on-duty/off-duty…it’s hard to tell) and it’s in her wheelhouse to carry off anything. If you’re a style blogger and you love this look, feel free to make a lovely example of yourself, prove how awesome this trend is, and send me the link. I’d be happy to post it.

Dipping your toe

What if you madly love vertical stripes, but need to tone it down in order to commit? I grabbed some beautiful Spring 2013 runway looks from my Pinterest board that show more forgiving ways to wear this trend.

Or just add a cute bag and still be right on trend. Now this, we could all do.

How do you shake out on this trend? Embrace, avoid or willing to cross the line?

  1. I totally avoid vertical stripes. I’m 5’10″ and very thin. The last thing I want is to look any taller or skinnier. Horizontal stripes yes, vertical -no.

  2. already have my summer stripes waiting in the closet!!! xxx

  3. Nice collection of beautiful striped clothing! I especially like the tan and white striped outfit. I’ve always liked stripes and am happy to see so many different styles in magazines and now here. I’ll continue wearing them and hopefully add a striped skirt this spring.

BTW, I’ve given up my beloved chocolate. How in the world were you strong minded enough to stop all sugar? This is HARD! Elaine

    • I really like the tan stripes too. Belstaff had a phenomenal collection this spring, but I know that we’ll see other lines doing them too.
Whoa–you gave up chocolate??!! Wow, wow, wow. Five boxes of Girl Scout cookies are in my house right now (some frozen, but 1 OPEN) and it’s been serious mind over matter. Tomorrow I can have one. Oddly, not craving chocolate after all this time. The first week is probably the hardest. Hang in there!!

  4. I like the more subtle stripes. I just noticed many stripes in the catalogs for spring so there you are! If I hadn’t read your blog I wouldn’t have noticed that they were the trend. I’ll be thinking of you tomorrow when sugar comes back on the menu.
