Baby, it’s cold outside

In Bratislava -- photo via TonboGirl.blogspot.com

Today, I’ve found some street style ideas on how to look chic even when the weather is cold, cold, cold. These shots come from Bratislava, Slovakia, Chicago, and Moscow and you can just feel the cold by looking at them! Nonetheless, they have taken to streets with style.

We might see a few flurries today in Denver, but the snow has been flying since Thanksgiving up in the Rocky Mountains. I have yet to break out my snow boots, but I know that the time is coming. Now, I see a lot of “winter boots” shown in magazines and in blogs that consist of sky-high heels or platforms and I think, oh those are cute if you’re going from car to restaurant, but how in the heck can you actually walk on snow or ice in those puppies?! Even the beloved/reviled classic Ugg boot is an iffy choice when it’s slick outside (absolutely no traction on those things). No, I’m talking about real winter boots for sledding, walking kids to school, traipsing through ski towns on winter holiday, commuting to work, going to classes, walking the dog, etc. You know, the ones you’ll reach for most days.

Here are some favorites that have loads of style, functionality and will keep you looking chic:

And for the guys, who do so much snow shoveling, car scraping and much of the sled pulling, here are some warm, rugged choices for him too. It’s not a bad holiday gift idea either. Treat him to warm feet this year and he just might make that early morning espresso run for you!

A (little) Shimmer

Glad to be back blogging today. It’s been one weird week, I tell ya. Not only did we fall back an hour with Daylight Savings last week, but I feel like I fell back three days due to an odd series of events. This is the quick summary of what happened starting back on Sunday: a) falling can of black beans significantly bruises my left foot while wearing very cute leopard print flats in SuperTarget, b) sick child for two days concurring with sick computer for four days = personal black hole, and lastly, c) freak oven accident while pulling out a pan of lasagna leads to the worst burn I’ve ever had. My husband and I Googled at least five web md sites to figure out if I should cover it with a bandage or not, because it was blistering (the consensus is yes). What we did learn is to never put butter on a burn, ever. Is this some Julia Child-esque remedy that I’ve never heard of? Anyway, don’t do it. Save your butter for croissants or toast. So, that’s been my week so far. Odd, very odd indeed.

Onward to fashion and things that shimmer, but just a little. As I was winding my way through the local Anthropologie last week (pre-black hole experience), I was happily struck by how many nice, subtle options there were for daytime shine. Shirts with little strands of gleaming thread woven through necklines or perhaps an embellished shoulder. A striped scarf with tonal sparkle to brighten up a coat or cozy cardigan. These are things you can wear on a weekday afternoon and not feel like you’ve overdone it. To boost this sentiment, I saw a good quote in the December issue of Lucky magazine that says:

Buy clothes that you’ll wear on a Tuesday afternoon, not a Saturday night — few people lead Saturday-night lives.

Words to shop by! Here are some of my picks for weekday glamour.

Tartan Treasure w/ golden threads $148

Off Broadway Top w/ woven sequins $168

Partly Cloudy Scarf $48 w/ metallic threads (also in gold)

Soldierly Sparkle Top $68 (other colors too)

Burnished Shadow Cardigan $118 w/ sequin shoulders

Discovered Plata Top

Corinthian Top $78 (also in Navy)

If you’re a devoted fan of Anthropologie clothes, like I am, please check out the two fantastic Anthro blogs listed below. It’s all-Anthro, all-the-time, showing the latest items, dressing room pictures, and reader outfits, so we can see how everyone’s wearing their favorites. I’ve been reading both for months and highly recommend them.

Another reason to check out Anthropologie this week is their great selection of housewares, gifts, holiday decor and delicious smelling candles (the Voluspa are my favorite). Also, this year they are carrying Clothbound Penguin Classic Novels like Treasure Island, Little Women, Wuthering Heights, Alice In Wonderland and A Christmas Carol, which would be perfect for friends and tweens.

Tribal Council

There’s been a healthy injection of tribal prints in the stores and it’s a look you can work into pieces you already have. The bold graphics wake up your wardrobe basics and really spice up them up. You can easily tone them down by slipping on a cardigan or jacket on top or play them up and make the print the center of attention. Maybe it’s just me, but when I see a woman in a funky, colorful, graphic print, it makes me think she’s artistic, easy-going and probably knows where to find a great pair of dangling earrings. I also think, she’s got to have a sense of humor, because who could be serious in this joyous riot of color and pattern!

The look from TurquoisePassion from Austin, TX (above) is dead on for a cocktail party, date night or girls’ night out. If you wanted to take this look to work, just switch out the flowy skirt for a pencil skirt or slight a-line and you’re good to go. It also would be perfect with pants or crops. You could do so much with this one top — I love it!

The second look by LissaKahayon of Manila, Philippines takes a colorful tribal skirt (which she wore as a top last year and then shortened it) and works it as a great transitional piece. She’s showing hers with bare legs and a tank top, but I could easily see this with a pair of tights, lace-up ankle boots or knee-high boots as well when the weather is cold. Great for work and casual.

Lastly, I came across another winning look from Annebeth from Antwerp, Belgium. You might remember her from another posting earlier this year in May, when I did Loving: Modern Prairie. I swear I’m not stalking her, I just loved how she styled this tribal top and high-waisted pant and then I realized it was the same fantastic girl from before. Obviously, she had loads and loads of style. At first blush, this might look like a simple top and pant combo, but when you look more closely you can see that Annebeth layered her tribal print top with a smaller print scarf in red and then topped it off with a gold filigree necklace. This is exactly how to mix prints with one big print as the focus and then adding a smaller print to complement it. Usually, you’d find common ground between the prints with one of the colors, but I’m sure even that’s a guideline to break.

Enjoy these tribal looks from these three style galleries via Chictopia.com today. I think you’ll like incorporating a tribal piece into your fall/winter wardrobe. I’ve already been happily sampling this look. A few months back, I stumbled upon an ikat print tank top at Urban Outfitters and being reasonably priced, I bought it without even trying it on (which I never do). In the two months I’ve had it, I’ve worn it probably six times already, both casually and dressed-up for dinner with friends. It’s one of those pieces that I’m so glad to have.

Keep It Going

It’s always perplexing when people assume that once one’s past a certain age, that they stop caring about how they look (not sure what that age is exactly). That somehow reaching the milestones of life: marriage, divorce, kids, career and the need to carry reading glasses) sends a woman straight into shapeless clothes and uninspired outfits. I think this is a load of b.s. Nearly everyone I know cares about how they look at some level, even if they don’t take it to the heights of being a devout fashionista.

Probably, more often than not, what happens is that our life changes, but our closets don’t really keep up with us. There are the unavoidable weight gains of pregnancy and menopause that force us to eye our pants with increasing loathing or roll our eyes when our shirt no longer skims easily over our belly. This is life and it happens to all women. The best thing we can do for ourselves is to build a closet full of clothes we love — whatever moment we are in, in our life. I would much rather have fewer clothes and love them, than to have a lot of things that make me feel cruddy when I put them on.

It’s not often that I run across street style shots of older women. So many of the shots I find are of women who look like they’re in their 20s or not much beyond. Today I’m happy to share some pictures of women who’ve seen some milestones. I can’t be sure what those milestones are, but I like that they are still dressing for life, whatever that life is right now. These women are keeping up with the times, looking modern, confident and vibrant. I’d even venture a guess that none of them wish they were 20 again.
