Taking Stock

In my closet, Apepazza Savia bootie

The stack of September fashion issues next to my nightstand is knee-high (literally). The glorious photo shoots, items to lust for, and designer collaborations in store for us in the coming months are all there in the pages, ripe for the plucking. I waited and waited for Vogue to finally make its way to the newsstand, and I have to say, I was completely underwhelmed by the issue. It felt like one big promo for NY Fashion Night Out. Blahh, that really blows. The trend reports and editorials left me flat. Ah, well, and so it goes. Skip the Vogue this year and grab the Harper’s Bazaar instead, it’s soooo much better.

So, last week I decided to take stock of my closet and see what I have that can make the jump to fall 2010. With the big trends in my mind and a few tear-outs from my magazine stack, I dove into the beast, to see what I could pull together. Hardly anyone has the means to buy a whole new fall wardrobe every year and I’m certainly no exception, but most of us own a few key items that will work in any new season. Here’s what to look for if you’re rummaging around your own closet:

  • color: camel, red, purples, blue, gray and gold
  • kitten heels
  • tailored suit
  • menswear vest
  • double-breasted or menswear coat
  • lady-like blouses
  • lace
  • 60s inspired dresses & skirts
  • denim shirt
  • motorcycle boots
  • oversized parka or anorak (bonus if it’s in olive or khaki)
  • chunky knits & fair isle patterns
  • faux fur or shearling
  • lace-up boots
  • cross-body bag
  • lady-like handbag
  • leopard and lizard
  • draped tops & dresses
  • Pendant necklaces, statement jewelry
  • Loafers, brogues and tassel detailing

I found a decent amount of things to build on in my own closet: a camel suede coat, red blazer, red scarf, menswear pant & skirt, two lace tops, a flowing maxi skirt, a pair of black suede booties, and a peep-toe ankle boot in nude. It’s a decent start and now I can work on The List of Desires and Wants and be on the lookout for deals as I fill in the holes. Top of list will be a pair of black, slim crops and some leopard-print flats (click any image below to see more).

I’m heading over to a friend’s house next week to help her sort through her closet for this fall. Should be fun!

Harper’s Bazaar gives their list of what to Buy, Keep & Store in this month’s issue as you contemplate your options:

BUY: Ladylike handbags, Kitten Heels and Pendant Charms

KEEP: Messenger bags, Wedges & Heavy Metal accessories

STORE: Long Clutches, Heeled Sneakers and Bib Necklaces.

Last but not least, I’m always on the look-out for great jeans that fit a curvy body. I found some for you (and me)…

Levi's Curve ID jeans, $59

Important Curvy Girl Public Service Announcement: if you’re looking for a pair of jeans and have a curvy body (pants fits your hips, but gap at the waist), check out Levi’s new Curve ID jeans. They really do fit curves and come in skinny, bootleg or straight legs styles, starting at $59. Levi’s claim that these jeans fit 80% of women. Um, wow, that’s really saying something…but, they did fit me and I’m very hard to fit when it comes to jeans, so I’m a believer. If that doesn’t work for you, give me a shout, ‘cuz I’ve got another go-to option for you.

Camel, Part 1

photo: Altamiranyc.blogspot.com

It’s very early in the morning (can’t sleep), so I’m just going to get right to it. Camel is one of the strongest colors influences you’ll see this fall. As an indicator, Chloe devoted nearly an entire collection to the color. If you were only going to buy a few pieces this entire season, you’d be right on target if you grabbed a piece in camel.

The smart part is that camel is a timeless neutral, so if you decide to splurge on a coat or luxurious pant suit, it’ll be something you can keep for years to come. Even if you’re ho-hum on beige, still look for a chunky knit, a skirt or go-to pair of pants and then add in another color. Some people can wear the color from head-to-toe, but if it’s too much for you, break it up with one of the other all-star players of fall 2010: red, leopard print or gray.

Today, I’m going to focus on coats, because if you were ever going to buy one in camel, this is the season for it. If you already have one in the closet, this is the time to bring it out and wear it, wear it, wear it. Lucky you! If not, here are some stellar options in several price ranges.
