Street Style: Men’s Fall List

Guys, I have not forgotten about you. I have deep love for you and have finally gotten my act together to post about fall fashion 2010 for men. Did you see the sweet men’s style magazine with Stephan Dorff on the cover, that the New York Times had this past Sunday? It was chock full of great looks with insanely-priced options (why do they always do that?) The good news for men is that, many of the spring looks you’ve already been working into your closet, will continue to be strong for fall. The plaid shirts, military jacket and oxfords you’ve already got, will continue to be on-trend. Now, you just need a few things, like a great coat and some lace-up boots to get started on the fall/winter season.

Here’s what to wear for Fall 2010:

  • Military-inspired looks: jackets, cargo pants, desert boots & lace-up boots
  • 3-piece suits
  • leather biker jackets
  • aviator jackets
  • dark khakis: browns, gray, navy
  • tonal dressing: shades of gray, camel, blue, brown through the whole outfit
  • blue-collar plaid: coats, shirts & ties (but not together, right?!)
  • toggle coats
  • double-breasted coats
  • shoes: lace-up boots, brougues, desert boots

New York Fashion Week starts today and I can’t wait to see what’s rolling out on the runway for Spring 2011. If you’re interested, you can see the Fashion Week calendar for who’s showing when and also see the collections at Style.com.

Back here in the land of fall fashion choices, you can’t go wrong with a crossbody bag these days. You can pick a small one or a big one depending on your need and you’ll be hands-free, which in and of itself is a liberating notion. Think of it, one hand can be on your phone (of course) and the other can be doing God knows what…making mischief, holding someone’s hand, looking for keys, riding a bike, squeezing fruit or holding your latte (of course). I mean the possibilities are endless, which is why I think you’ll like having one. Some of the styles shown harken to a 70s vibe, while others go sleek or even rocker. There’s something here for everyone and I’d pair these looks with military, aviator, layered knits or something laid-back.

Have a great one!

Taking Stock

In my closet, Apepazza Savia bootie

The stack of September fashion issues next to my nightstand is knee-high (literally). The glorious photo shoots, items to lust for, and designer collaborations in store for us in the coming months are all there in the pages, ripe for the plucking. I waited and waited for Vogue to finally make its way to the newsstand, and I have to say, I was completely underwhelmed by the issue. It felt like one big promo for NY Fashion Night Out. Blahh, that really blows. The trend reports and editorials left me flat. Ah, well, and so it goes. Skip the Vogue this year and grab the Harper’s Bazaar instead, it’s soooo much better.

So, last week I decided to take stock of my closet and see what I have that can make the jump to fall 2010. With the big trends in my mind and a few tear-outs from my magazine stack, I dove into the beast, to see what I could pull together. Hardly anyone has the means to buy a whole new fall wardrobe every year and I’m certainly no exception, but most of us own a few key items that will work in any new season. Here’s what to look for if you’re rummaging around your own closet:

  • color: camel, red, purples, blue, gray and gold
  • kitten heels
  • tailored suit
  • menswear vest
  • double-breasted or menswear coat
  • lady-like blouses
  • lace
  • 60s inspired dresses & skirts
  • denim shirt
  • motorcycle boots
  • oversized parka or anorak (bonus if it’s in olive or khaki)
  • chunky knits & fair isle patterns
  • faux fur or shearling
  • lace-up boots
  • cross-body bag
  • lady-like handbag
  • leopard and lizard
  • draped tops & dresses
  • Pendant necklaces, statement jewelry
  • Loafers, brogues and tassel detailing

I found a decent amount of things to build on in my own closet: a camel suede coat, red blazer, red scarf, menswear pant & skirt, two lace tops, a flowing maxi skirt, a pair of black suede booties, and a peep-toe ankle boot in nude. It’s a decent start and now I can work on The List of Desires and Wants and be on the lookout for deals as I fill in the holes. Top of list will be a pair of black, slim crops and some leopard-print flats (click any image below to see more).

I’m heading over to a friend’s house next week to help her sort through her closet for this fall. Should be fun!

Harper’s Bazaar gives their list of what to Buy, Keep & Store in this month’s issue as you contemplate your options:

BUY: Ladylike handbags, Kitten Heels and Pendant Charms

KEEP: Messenger bags, Wedges & Heavy Metal accessories

STORE: Long Clutches, Heeled Sneakers and Bib Necklaces.

Last but not least, I’m always on the look-out for great jeans that fit a curvy body. I found some for you (and me)…

Levi's Curve ID jeans, $59

Important Curvy Girl Public Service Announcement: if you’re looking for a pair of jeans and have a curvy body (pants fits your hips, but gap at the waist), check out Levi’s new Curve ID jeans. They really do fit curves and come in skinny, bootleg or straight legs styles, starting at $59. Levi’s claim that these jeans fit 80% of women. Um, wow, that’s really saying something…but, they did fit me and I’m very hard to fit when it comes to jeans, so I’m a believer. If that doesn’t work for you, give me a shout, ‘cuz I’ve got another go-to option for you.

Maxi Skirt Cool

at Reed Krakoff (photo: style.com)

Maxi skirts for fall is a trend I just love. Maxi skirts made a comeback this past spring and certainly were cute with sandals and a tee shirt through the warmer months. I did a post on spring maxi skirts (Loving: Maxi Skirts) awhile back and think it’s time to update the styling for fall 2010. It seems like it might be a tricky, for instance, how do you keep from getting swallowed up by all that fabric, especially when covered up on top too? How do you make it look modern and not simply bohemian or (aaak) dowdy?

How to style a maxi skirt

I like the balance of a leather jacket or some sort of vest (suede or shearling would be pretty), with the long lines of the maxi skirt. Ideally, the leather jacket should be very soft and pliable. It should move with you and be able to scrunch up in your hand. The stiffness of a traditional motorcycle jacket would be too unbending for this look. The skirt can either be slim cut or flowing, with the latter being a bit softer and therefore a stronger counter to the leather. Choose a light basic top underneath. Finish off with a pair of lace-up boots, strappy ankle boots, or a stacked heel. You’ll want a thicker heel, so it won’t get lost under the hem of the skirt.

Here’s my Polyvore set of how I’d style a maxi skirt right now. I love how all the looks came out. Check out the cool graphic prints on the maxis from Topshop (2nd from left) and from Miss Selfridge (3rd from left). Petite girls might have to go the solid route and choose a jacket and skirt in the same color tone to get the most lengthening look.  I went digging through my own closet last week for a maxi + jacket outfit and came up with one that resembles the last look. Can’t wait to wear it. I wish I had the height for the zig-zag skirt, but I don’t. Curses!
