7 Cool-Weather Vests For Right Now

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got most of your summer clothes, a handful of sweaters, a few sandals, a few boots and all kinds of tees stuffing your closet right now. The weather is bouncing between warm and cool, and everyday is a guessing game. This is when I love to move my vests to the forefront. They work for cool mornings/evenings, give outfits a more fall-like look, and they can be worn right into colder months. Following are some really fantastic vests available right now:

7 fall Vests to wear now (and Later)

Layfayette 148 New York Vest, $448

Anthropologie Temescal Fring Vest, $198

JOA Brushed Plaid Vest, $129

Iris & Ink Shearling Vest, $595

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, $275

OAK Wool-blend Vest, $470

Some of these picks are casual and some more dressy. If you’re a trend-follower, the fringe and folk print vests are for you. I also really like the longer lines on a few of these and can see them looking sleek over slim pants or skinnies. While I always try to keep the price-points at less than $500, the Iris & Ink shearling vest crept past that mark. Sorry! (I could not find a cuter real shearling vest.)

Hope you’ll dig out a vest from your closet and put it into rotation. We can’t ignore the turning leaves for much longer.

Street Inspiration: Blanket Sweaters

Style Council (photo: Chictopia.com)

Lindsey Thornburg cloak

There’s a mini-trend of blanket sweaters for this fall/winter and this is one of the first pictures I’ve seen of one on the streets. I love the bold graphics of this woman’s American Indian motif sweater (she goes by Style Council on chictopia.com). The big, voluminous sweater takes her cutoffs and white tee to another level of interest. The hat is an inspired accessory and she didn’t try to match it to her boots or even the sweater. Awhile back, I wrote a post of how wearing three colors/shades really punch up the impact of an outfit and I think she has proves that here. She’s got the light blue shorts, the brown tonal shades in the hat and the sweater, and black. You can see more of her looks at her own blog Danny Rose.

A few weeks ago, a friend of mine let me know about a gorgeous collection of cloaks by Lindsey Thornburg, shown above, right. These are truly unique items and her eye for patterning and fabric is sublime. Her website says that many of the looks are inspired by a trip to Peru and you can certainly see those influences in her work. Check out her full collection, which also include dresses at LindseyThornburg.com.

I always like to pull an edit of the featured item for you from the vast shopping mecca that is the internet. Here are a few cool blanket sweaters for you to contemplate. Don’t you just want to grab one and throw it on?! They look so warm and coolly chic at the same time. I believe the one on the top right row is incredibly similar to Style Council’s sweater coat above, from Asos.com. Some of the other ones below are reversible, so you get two looks for the price of one. You could belt it or let it hang loosely — whatever you feel is the right vibe for the day.

Sean from Seattle could not be more stylish in this outfit. He’s working the chunky knit scarf, relaxed trench and worn-in Clark desert boots (plus a rolled-cuff in his jeans). He looks hip without looking forced and this is a spot-on outfit for guys this fall. Change it up to suit your personality, but all the elements are there.

Here are some options for you or your man:

Love this look, guys and so many of the pieces are classic. You’ll be able to wear the boots and trench for years to come.
