Guy Style: Skater

Paris Gent

(photo: DapperLou.com)

You might think that this well-dressed guy could be found in any US city across the map. But I was surprised to see that he is from Paris and that our American hipster vibe (complete with beard) is alive and well across the pond.

He’s got great details from the 90′s plaid shirt, casual hoodie + tee, bomber jacket to the flat-front khakis messily tucked into work boots. It’s the details that count.

The street style shot above came Louge Delcy at DapperLou.com and it’s worth your while to go check out his site. He’s a Brooklyn-born photographer who’s got the sartorial gift. Here he is below. Don’t you love that smile!

It’s a talent to dress that like and look so cool doing it. There’s more amazing shots to see and style to take in. Go check it out.

Abracadabra: Jen’s Boots

Jennifer Aniston, photo: outfitidentifier.com

Jen looks a little pissed-off in this photo. I mean honestly, who can blame her. She’s dating a magician (not really, but don’t you get a strong magician vibe from her boyfriend, Justin Theroux?) I just had no idea she was into that kind of thing, but if it makes Jen happy, who am I to meddle. Although she’s perturbed about the whole situation, check out her sweeeeeet Prada boots. This is where I begin to obsess a bit.

Prada

Nothing against Prada, but…

While these grey Prada beauties (above) are selling for $590, I knew there had to be more affordable options available. While Jen’s are lovely, we should all be able to fetch groceries in a tank, a pair of boyfriend jeans and killer, lace-up boots, without having to eat Ramen for a month.

Abracadabra

Madewell Suede Sandstorm Boots, $188
Bettye Muller Owen boot, $295
Asos Arizona Suede lace-up boot, $96

Ah, the magic of the internet. Fantastic look-alike options to rival Jen’s. These boots are low enough for everyday walking, but definitely up the game of an outfit. Don’t be afraid to order from Asos either (the last boots pictured). While they’re a UK store, they ship for a mere $6.00. Crikey, that’s pretty magical too.

Rock the Boot

Timberland Partners with Pharrell Williams on Eco-Friendly Boot

This is timely news for me. We just saw Pharrell perform with N.E.R.D on Sunday night and he is one cool dude. They opened for the Gorillaz (who put on a sick show) and he got the house jumpin’. Pharrell knows how to work a crowd and how to lay down a thumping track. It also looks like he knows how to design a boot with lots of swagger. He teamed up with longtime, boot mainstay, Timberland to make a line of eco-friendly boots out of organic cotton and recycled plastic bottles, materials from a company called Bionic Yarn, which he co-owns. The line of shoes and boots drops in January 2011, so be sure to check them out. Oh, and he said N.E.R.D.s new album hits November 2, so he’s been a busy little bee, hasn’t he?!

Hey, this is cool, I just found a video from one of the songs he debuted from the new album on Sunday night. Here’s “I Wanna Jam” from the new album Nothing.

Alright, moving on to the upcoming festivities of Halloween. In the spirit of this weekend of ghouls and ghosts, I found two tasty-looking cocktails. They are easy to make and just the thing to serve to bewitch a houseful of friends.

Black Shadow

Preparation:

  1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass or serve on the rocks in an old-fashioned glass.
  4. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Kiss of Death

  • Prosecco or champagne
  • Maraschino cherry

Fill a champagne flute with cold bubbly. Garnish with a cherry.

Have fun this weekend, but please don’t let anyone drink and drive. Kids will be out on the streets and you know how crazy and unpredictable they can be when they’re all hopped up on sugar! Be safe and well.

Street Style: Men’s Fall List

Military inspired (photo: Tommy Ton for GQ)

Guys, I have not forgotten about you. I have deep love for you and have finally gotten my act together to post about fall fashion 2010 for men. Did you see the sweet men’s style magazine with Stephan Dorff on the cover, that the New York Times had this past Sunday? It was chock full of great looks with insanely-priced options (why do they always do that?) The good news for men is that, many of the spring looks you’ve already been working into your closet, will continue to be strong for fall. The plaid shirts, military jacket and oxfords you’ve already got, will continue to be on-trend. Now, you just need a few things, like a great coat and some lace-up boots to get started on the fall/winter season.

Taking Stock

In my closet, Apepazza Savia bootie

The stack of September fashion issues next to my nightstand is knee-high (literally). The glorious photo shoots, items to lust for, and designer collaborations in store for us in the coming months are all there in the pages, ripe for the plucking. I waited and waited for Vogue to finally make its way to the newsstand, and I have to say, I was completely underwhelmed by the issue. It felt like one big promo for NY Fashion Night Out. Blahh, that really blows. The trend reports and editorials left me flat. Ah, well, and so it goes. Skip the Vogue this year and grab the Harper’s Bazaar instead, it’s soooo much better.

So, last week I decided to take stock of my closet and see what I have that can make the jump to fall 2010. With the big trends in my mind and a few tear-outs from my magazine stack, I dove into the beast, to see what I could pull together. Hardly anyone has the means to buy a whole new fall wardrobe every year and I’m certainly no exception, but most of us own a few key items that will work in any new season. Here’s what to look for if you’re rummaging around your own closet:

  • color: camel, red, purples, blue, gray and gold
  • kitten heels
  • tailored suit
  • menswear vest
  • double-breasted or menswear coat
  • lady-like blouses
  • lace
  • 60s inspired dresses & skirts
  • denim shirt
  • motorcycle boots
  • oversized parka or anorak (bonus if it’s in olive or khaki)
  • chunky knits & fair isle patterns
  • faux fur or shearling
  • lace-up boots
  • cross-body bag
  • lady-like handbag
  • leopard and lizard
  • draped tops & dresses
  • Pendant necklaces, statement jewelry
  • Loafers, brogues and tassel detailing

I found a decent amount of things to build on in my own closet: a camel suede coat, red blazer, red scarf, menswear pant & skirt, two lace tops, a flowing maxi skirt, a pair of black suede booties, and a peep-toe ankle boot in nude. It’s a decent start and now I can work on The List of Desires and Wants and be on the lookout for deals as I fill in the holes. Top of list will be a pair of black, slim crops and some leopard-print flats (click any image below to see more).

I’m heading over to a friend’s house next week to help her sort through her closet for this fall. Should be fun!

Harper’s Bazaar gives their list of what to Buy, Keep & Store in this month’s issue as you contemplate your options:

BUY: Ladylike handbags, Kitten Heels and Pendant Charms

KEEP: Messenger bags, Wedges & Heavy Metal accessories

STORE: Long Clutches, Heeled Sneakers and Bib Necklaces.

Last but not least, I’m always on the look-out for great jeans that fit a curvy body. I found some for you (and me)…

Levi's Curve ID jeans, $59

Important Curvy Girl Public Service Announcement: if you’re looking for a pair of jeans and have a curvy body (pants fits your hips, but gap at the waist), check out Levi’s new Curve ID jeans. They really do fit curves and come in skinny, bootleg or straight legs styles, starting at $59. Levi’s claim that these jeans fit 80% of women. Um, wow, that’s really saying something…but, they did fit me and I’m very hard to fit when it comes to jeans, so I’m a believer. If that doesn’t work for you, give me a shout, ‘cuz I’ve got another go-to option for you.
