Going West Coast

Looking to the lovely West Coast for inspiration today. The steady beat of sunshine, rock-n-roll cool and creative chic outfits that Californians put together, make terrific warm weather influences for the rest of us.

So, Cal

There’s an undertone of ease to these looks, which I am always drawn too. Pops of color and accessories really elevate these looks from anything ordinary. The addition of a white blazer on Elsal of Wander Uptown, takes her short + T-shirt combo to the next level. And did you notice the light-wash jeans on The Maya Kay?! It’s a 180 degree departure from the over-dyed indigo jeans that have ruled for the past few years. The light color feels right at home during the warm months with an ocean breeze on your skin. If you didn’t want to lighten up your jean color (a bad-idea for some of us — like me), maybe a jean jacket is better. They’re back too.

I no longer wear short-shorts (eek), but would happily swap-out the shorts for a skirt or cropped pant in these outfits. It’s all about doing what works best for your body and re-imagining your closet in new ways. We probably don’t need as many new clothes as we think we do, just new ways to pair our current clothes.

We’ve finally got warm weather in Boulder and Denver, so we’re catching up to the rest of you. Enjoy the day!

Loving: Oxfords

Time to borrow from the boys this spring and lace-up a cute pair of oxfords. Slip them on to balance out a feminine dress or pair them with cropped pants to show off the details. I love how these chic women styled their oxfords (all in pants, no less).

In my last post, You’re Probably A Better Shopper Than I Am, readers chimed in to say that they love to shop online. It’s one of the reasons that I like to include a product feature whenever I talk about trends. I’m hoping that it saves you a bit of time searching for the perfect thing.

These are 5 of the cutest pairs of oxfords available right now.

  5. Frye Delia Oxford, $168 (more colors)

While searching for a pair of black pumps a few weeks ago, I stumbled upon this comfy oxford with a white sole (tip: size up if you end up getting a pair) and bought it. What do you think? Looking forward to breaking them out soon.

Enjoy the day!

Vertical Stripes: Avoid or Embrace?

It’s going to happen whether we like it or not and it’s time to decide where you stand on this one. Better now than in the dressing room, wondering, ‘Is this me?’

One of the strongest trends for Spring 2013 is vertical stripes. Cute, like pinstripes, right? No, more like jailbird or circus usher. When Marc Jacobs, Balmain, Michael Kors, Dior, Tommy Hilfiger and Moschino all sent very bold stripes down the runway, I thought, wow…really? And it’s not just the big design houses. Bold stripes are already trickling into more affordable stores like, Asos, Zara and H&M.

I know we are going to see many adorable, stylish women who have managed to make this look chic. In fact, here is proof of it:

But then again she is a model (on-duty/off-duty…it’s hard to tell) and it’s in her wheelhouse to carry off anything. If you’re a style blogger and you love this look, feel free to make a lovely example of yourself, prove how awesome this trend is, and send me the link. I’d be happy to post it.

Dipping your toe

What if you madly love vertical stripes, but need to tone it down in order to commit? I grabbed some beautiful Spring 2013 runway looks from my Pinterest board that show more forgiving ways to wear this trend.

Or just add a cute bag and still be right on trend. Now this, we could all do.

How do you shake out on this trend? Embrace, avoid or willing to cross the line?

Getting Your Greens

This week I borrowed a friend’s juicer to see if I liked it. Rumor has it that juicers are annoying to clean-up, but still undaunted, I wanted to see if vibrantly fresh juice would affect my energy and overall appetite. We (it’s a family experiment) started off easily with fruit juices (orange/pineapple) and have now moved into fruit/vegetable combos (carrot/apple and carrot/apple/celery/parsley). My husband has already told me not to tell him what’s in the glass, because if I use the words beet, kale or wheatgrass, he’s gonna bail on me. Completely predictable and I love the chance to take on a challenge.

7 Daily Greens

If drinking your veggies is off-putting, at least fashion has given us another way to get our daily green fix, since hunter, forest and emerald greens are strong tones right now. Here are 7 stylish examples of how people are wearing it:

Using What You’ve Got

You’ve probably already got some deep autumnal greens in your closet. Time to dust them off and put into rotation. Pairs well with deep purple, peacock blue, black, white and wine.

If you’ve got a juice recipe that you love, please share it. I’d love to hear about it. Have a good one!

P.S. Today I’m going to try The Chiller (from The Juicing Bible) which is a combo of carrot/celery/red pepper/apple/cucumber/zucchini. Sounds like a salad in a glass to me. (photo: juicingvegetables.me)

White in Shining Armour

It’s after Labor Day Weekend, so it’s time to pack up your whites until next…naw, just kiddin’ ya. White is sticking around all winter as a strong trend for Fall/Winter 2012. So, for those of us who love to steal out into the frosty streets in shades of white, this is a great season to collect more of the pieces you love.

There’s a look here to fit every age. Take your favorite look and tweak it to make the silhouette work for your body type. Do short sleeves with a maxi, shorten (or lengthen) a hemline, and pick a dress that highlights your best parts. Black is a great choice for accessories, but dressing tonally in white and cream is also a strong choice. Go with a shade that looks best with your skin tone.

I think of trends like a fashion buffet. Grab the things that work for you (shapes, colors, accessories, silhouettes), and leave the rest for the next person. Sometimes a trend we love, suits us better in an accessories (i.e. choosing a baroque-inspired clutch over a whole baroque dress.) In the end, fashion is personal and that’s what makes it (and us) interesting.

More awesome posts I did (hmm, so humble…) on the white trend, which has been gaining steam since Spring 2011.
