The Oscars: Who Got It Right

Maggie Gyllenhaal in Dries Van Noten

You’ll see a lot of Best Dressed lists coming off Sunday’s Academy Awards Ceremony. They’ll be showing off beautiful couture gowns, lovely jewels and the celebrities who wore them. I agree that there are a lot of amazing dresses to walk the Red Carpet, but I don’t always agree with the lists. Too often they are about how beautiful the dress is, or how many ruffles were crammed onto it, but not about how beautiful the dress makes the woman look. So, I decided to make a list of the Who Got It Right at The Oscars. Kind of a long title — I’ll have to work on that. And I’m not a hater, so you won’t see me putting up a worst dressed list. That’s just not my thing.

Ok, Maggie Gyllenhaal looks amazing in this Dries Van Noten gown. She’s long and lean and can wear a quirky pattern like nobody’s business. The gown is kind of Indie, like she is, so it looks amazing and stays true to her personality.

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa

Well, I knew somebody would snatch up this Marchesa gown when I posted it to my Facebook fan page a few weeks ago. It’s perfectly gorgeous on Sandra Bullock and makes her look statuesque and Best Actress worthy. Her dark hair is a nice balance to the liquid-silver coloring and although I would have changed her lipstick color, in the scheme of things, that’s neither here nor there.

Demi Moore in Atelier Versace

Honestly, Demi Moore is 47 years-old and couldn’t look more amazing. This blush of a peachy-pink color complements her faux-tanned skin, dark hair and pretty eyes. The cascade of ruffles looks feminine, without looking girly or otherwise inappropriate for her age. The hint of leg keeps her from being swallowed up in a sea of ruffles and I like that. The fitted, criss-cross fabric, at the top, shows off her small torso and downplays her famous decollete. Another big score for Rachel Zoe, who is Demi’s stylist.

Meryl Streep in Chris March

Now see, this is how to dress when you are the most celebrated actress in town. I don’t think Meryl Streep has ever looked better, than in this beautifully draped, Chris March gown. She looks sexy, modern and has highlighted her figure in the most beguiling way.

Carey Mulligan in Prada

Carey Mulligan‘s Prada gown was right on the money. This feminine, strapless gown, with the sweetheart neckline, looked so chic with her pixie haircut. It was youthful, flirty and dramatic. I liked the shorter hem in front, that swept out to a train in the back, but I wasn’t into those shoes. For me, the heavy strap across her ankle interrupts the flow. Ok, so I got that off my chest, moving on, the dramatic, long earrings added a boost of sparkle near her face and she looked fresh, glowing and ready for fun.

Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka Couture

All hail the Queen! Let us bow down to Queen Latifah for choosing this stunning, lavender gown from Badgley Mischka. The asymmetrical neckline and jeweled cross-body detailing are downright alluring. When she stepped out on stage to present the award, I thought, mmm-hmmm, she is lookin’ fine and she knows how to dress her body.

That’s my list. Agree? Disagree?? I want to hear about it. Go ahead and fire off a comment!
