End of Summer: Peach Ice Cream

Locally-grown peaches are ripe and ready for the picking at local markets and are simply overflowing with summer flavor. The local peaches available right now in my area are from Palisade, CO. They arrive at the stands with much fanfare, because they really are fantastic. With cooler temperatures right around the corner, I’d like the thumb my nose at the change of season and share this recipe for Homemade Peach Ice Cream. It’s from the Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert book, so you know it’s going to be good.

Homemade Peach Ice Cream

Makes about 1 quart of ice cream and you can adjust the recipe, if you want a lighter version, by using lower-fat milk. I always make my ice cream the day before I need it, because the peaches have to be refrigerated for a few hours to chill and also, because I like freezing my homemade ice cream overnight, so it’s firm when serving.

Reading Update

Summer reading had its fits and spurts, but I was able to finish a good number of books — six in all. I know that sounds like a lot, but a few were Young Adult fiction, and those are always quick reads for me. Here’s what I’ve been reading: Tuck Everlasting, One Day, Bossypants, Fly Away Home, Catching Fire and this past weekend, I finished Mockingjay.

This latest book puts me at 14 out of my goal of 24 books read for the Goodreads 2011 Book Challenge. I’m only 2 books behind at my current pace. Do cookbooks count, because I read those cover-to-cover all the time?!

  1. How was “Bossypants?” I love Tina Fey, and that book is next on my list.

    • I thought the book was good, but not my favorite of the summer — I think I gave it 3 out of 5 stars in my review. There were some chapters that had me rolling and others that I just skimmed. If you’re a huge fan, I’m sure you’ll get a kick out of it. You can hear her voice in every word.

  2. And that peach ice cream looks divine! Yum!

  3. Ice cream looks delicious and I love the book One Day such a touching story! Jen xoxo http://mystylisticlife.wordpress.com

    • I loved One Day too and I agree that it was touching. The author’s writing was superb. He crafted a modern love story that was easy to relate to, funny and in touch with the times. Need to see the movie now. Does anyone have a review of it?
