Not only do Chinti & Parker clothes come in feel-good fabrics like organic cotton, cashmere and wool, but they also run a feel-good eco-conscious company that pays attention to their factories, fabric sources, and carbon footprint. I’m also smitten by their designs with adorable hearts, stars and color combinations. There are a few items that give me sticker-shock, but I notice that TheOutnet.com (which is Net-a-Porter’s outlet) frequently has Chinti & Parker items on sale (like the cute heart & stars sweater, above).

I recently read that a conventionally produced cotton t-shirt takes 700 gallons of water to make. That’s 22 bathtubs to make one t-shirt. Now, think of all the cotton t-shirts out there and it becomes mind-boggling. Now we all love our cotton t-shirts, myself included, so what’s a consumer to do? Well, we can start making a difference by simply checking the garment tag. Organic cotton (up to 60% less water) and other less thirsty natural fibers like bamboo, modal, tencel and silk, tend to be better choices because they use less water to produce, can be recycled or re-purposed and in the end, are still biodegradable.

I plan to feature more companies that are producing feel-good products, because there are a lot of exciting, craft-driven and purposeful companies to be highlighted. The wonderful part is that we don’t have to sacrifice style for substance.
