More Likely: Perforated

runway Michael Kors eyelet skirt

Michael Kors Spring 2015

Another spring look from Michael Kors 2015 runway this week that hits one of fashion’s current trends — perforated. I like the way this perforated skirt is reminiscent of eyelet without the extra dose of sweetness. You’ll also see this trend on handbags, tops, sleeves and shoes.

Elliot Lucca bucket bag

Elliot Lucca bucket bag $98

Just yesterday the Nordstrom catalog landed in the mail showing this yellow Elliot Lucca bucket bag ($98). This perforated little number ticks two trends in one bag, because the drawstring bucket bag is everywhere right now. If you have the slightest weakness for this shape, this is your season to grab one. I had one years ago (probably 20+ years) in tan that I adored and wore all the time until a pen leaked in the bottom and ruined it. Clearly I’m still a bit traumatized over it.

But, back to the matter at hand. Here are some more outfit ideas that incorporate the modern perforated look.

I’ve already purchased a perforated grey belt and am likely to grab a pair of flats for this summer. What do you think of the trend? Are you more likely to skip or shop something perforated this season?

How cute is that Dutch braid? The rest of the tutorial shows how to fix hair  as shown or how to make a braided crown with messy bun underneath. It doesn’t look too done, which is nice. Have to try this on one on my daughter for a test run.

Enjoy the day!

My Trusty Six

Fall Snow (Douglas Cushnie via Flickr)

Winter plopped down this week like a sledgehammer. I’ve lived in Colorado for over 40 years and on the one hand, nothing surprises me weather-wise, but on the other hand, this was a buzz kill even for me. Getting dressed today had me diving into the dark corner of my closet to unearth my snow boots, so I could take Jackson for a walk, while the temps were still in the teens. I think it’s sliding into single digits tonight. Good grief.

Living through countless winters of ice, snow and freezing temps, I’m here to share the tried-and-true boots that carry me through an entire winter. I recently added the Moto Boots from the Nordstom Half-Yearly Sale to make up my indispensable six, and I love them.

The Moto Boot / Waterproof / Wear with Jeans, Leggings

Aquatalia by Marvin K ‘Sweetie’ short boot

The Tall Boot / Wear with Skirts, Jeans / Dress-up or Down

Ugg “Darcie’ boot, with adjustable calf buckle

The Active Boot / Waterproof / Sledding, After-Ski, Dog Walking, Kid Toting

Sorel ‘Joan of Arctic’ Knit boot

Rugged & Mountain-y / Weatherproof / Casual, Weekend, Mountain Girl

Bos. & Co ‘Outercity’

Short Boot / Waterproof Suede, Non-Slip bottom / Dressy, Great City Boot

Aquatalia ‘Famous’ bootie

Ankle Boot / Waterproof, Non-Slip bottom/ Dressy, Date-Nights

Aquatalia ‘Ruby’ bootie

As you can tell, I’m a huge fan of waterproof options. I love suede and hate the idea of ruining it in wet weather. Aquatalia makes gorgeous suede in flexible, cushioned, weather-proof options and I always get mine during a Nordstrom Sale, even if it’s the middle of July. These six boots are my BFFs all winter long and what I’ll be reaching for day-in and day-out over the next few months.

How many winter boots do you have? Which ones are your winter BFFs?

7 Cool-Weather Vests For Right Now

If you’re anything like me, you’ve got most of your summer clothes, a handful of sweaters, a few sandals, a few boots and all kinds of tees stuffing your closet right now. The weather is bouncing between warm and cool, and everyday is a guessing game. This is when I love to move my vests to the forefront. They work for cool mornings/evenings, give outfits a more fall-like look, and they can be worn right into colder months. Following are some really fantastic vests available right now:

7 fall Vests to wear now (and Later)

Layfayette 148 New York Vest, $448

Anthropologie Temescal Fring Vest, $198

JOA Brushed Plaid Vest, $129

Iris & Ink Shearling Vest, $595

Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent, $275

OAK Wool-blend Vest, $470

Some of these picks are casual and some more dressy. If you’re a trend-follower, the fringe and folk print vests are for you. I also really like the longer lines on a few of these and can see them looking sleek over slim pants or skinnies. While I always try to keep the price-points at less than $500, the Iris & Ink shearling vest crept past that mark. Sorry! (I could not find a cuter real shearling vest.)

Hope you’ll dig out a vest from your closet and put it into rotation. We can’t ignore the turning leaves for much longer.

Nothing New – Day 30!

Little Black Dress + Boho

Little Black Dress + Boho

Wearing: Maeve Liban Shawl Dress (Anthropologie) / Nine West beaded thong sandal /  World Market blue-green wooden bead necklace / Loft silver bangle / White House | Black Market silver bow belt.

Here it is — the last day of my Nothing New project! Thirty days of options from what I already had in the closet. So for the last day, I had to wear my little black dress, right?! I took this dress on our last trip (Postcard: Las Vegas) and wore with heels, evening clutch and the whole 9-yards. Today, I wanted to wear it how I would this summer: with boho sandals, a chunky necklace and silver accents. It fits well with the bohemian flair of Boulder and yet is classic enough to wear in any town.

I learned a lot from this project, which I’ll share in another post. Hopefully, my thoughts can be helpful to you too, as you face your closet everyday. A huge thanks to everyone who stuck with me through 30 days of just my clothes and my face on the blog everyday. Jackson (my dog) would have loved to be in the last photo, but he is busy at doggie daycare today, getting wet, dirty and having a ball.

Thanks again for being so supportive the last 30 days. You guys are the best!
